Board of Directors
Understanding the Role of our Board of Directors
The Board of Directors is the governing body of OPIRG-GRIPO. Its members are elected by the organization’s membership and are responsible for ensuring that the group fulfills its mission, operates in alignment with its values, and complies with all legal and financial obligations.
Governance & Oversight
-
Set the strategic direction of OPIRG in line with its mandate of social and environmental justice, anti-oppression, and community engagement.
-
Ensure policies and decisions reflect the needs and voices of the membership.
Financial Stewardship
Approve annual budgets and oversee the responsible use of resources, including funding from student levies, grants, and donations.
Review financial reports and ensure transparency and accountability in all spending.
Support & Supervision of Staff
Hire, supervise, and support staff members, ensuring they have the resources and guidance to carry out programming.
Act as a liaison between staff and the membership.
Membership & Community Engagement
Represent and promote OPIRG-GRIPO within the university and broader Ottawa community.
Support outreach, events, campaigns, and collaborations with student and community groups
Decision-Making & Policy Development

Develop and update policies to keep the organization safe, inclusive, and effective.
Legal Compliance
Ensure OPIRG operates within the requirements of the Ontario Not-for-Profit-Act Corporations Act (ONCA).
Approve and sign required documents, contracts, and annual reports.
What this means for Board Members?
-
They are not just a figurehead. They actively help shape the priorities and projects of OPIRG.
-
They commit to attending regular board meetings (often monthly), participating in committees or working groups, and supporting events or campaigns when possible.
-
They bring your own skills, perspectives, and lived experience to strengthen the collective work of the organization.
